Short definition
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing your online presence so that AI platforms, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, correctly mention your business or brand when users ask questions relevant to your service.
Where SEO is about ranking in search engines, GEO is about being mentioned in AI answers.
Why GEO is becoming important
Until 2023, a search journey almost always started on Google. In 2026, a growing share of searches happen in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Gemini. Users ask questions like:
- "Which web agency is good for trade businesses?"
- "Who builds websites for flooring contractors?"
- "Which AI chatbot can I use for my contracting business?"
The AI often gives 2 to 5 answers. If your business isn't on that list, the customer is already gone before ever seeing your website.
The difference with SEO
| Traditional SEO | GEO | |---|---| | Goal: rank high in Google | Goal: get mentioned in AI answers | | Signals: backlinks, keywords, CTR | Signals: entity definitions, citations, context | | Measurable via: Search Console | Measurable via: manually asking AI's questions | | Optimizes for: crawler | Optimizes for: language model |
What makes GEO optimization effective?
There are five building blocks that determine whether an AI platform mentions your business:
1. Entity clarity. Is it crystal clear to an AI what your business is, where it's located, and what it does? Structured data (JSON-LD schema.org) makes this unambiguous.
2. Citations and mentions. Are you mentioned on other websites, blogs, business directories, and social media with consistent information? AI models learn from these external sources.
3. Content authority. Do you have pages that answer specific questions in your field? AI models need reference material to cite from.
4. Consistency. Do you use the same business name, the same description, and the same address details everywhere? Inconsistency weakens the AI's mental model.
5. Technical accessibility. Are you blocking GPTBot, Claude-Web, or PerplexityBot in your robots.txt? Then you'll never be mentioned. Explicitly allow AI crawlers.
How do you measure GEO?
There is no Search Console for AI yet. You measure GEO by directly asking questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity:
- Ask three relevant questions for your niche
- Note who gets mentioned
- Repeat monthly and track the shift
What's the first step for a business?
- Make sure you have
Organizationschema on your site with complete business details - Write 5 to 10 pages that answer specific questions in your field
- Ensure consistent listings on Chamber of Commerce registries, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, and trade related directories
- Check that your robots.txt doesn't block GPTBot, Claude-Web, or PerplexityBot
- Measure monthly whether you appear in AI answers for your core topic
GEO is not a replacement for SEO, it's a parallel layer. Businesses that do both win.
