Building a Shopify store costs anywhere from a few hundred to tens of thousands of dollars, and that answer helps you nothing without context. This guide lays out the real costs: the one-time build, Shopify's own monthly fee, and the transaction costs that most quotes leave out.
The three cost buckets
A Shopify store has three kinds of cost you need to keep apart:
| Cost | What it is | Guide price | |------|------------|-------------| | One-time build | Design, setup, products, integrations | Depends on scope and custom work | | Shopify subscription | The platform itself, monthly | Fixed monthly fee, depends on your plan | | Transaction fees | Fee per sale via your payment provider | Percentage per transaction |
The build is one-time, but the subscription and transaction fees run for as long as you sell. Anyone who only looks at the build price is missing most of the picture.
What drives the build price?
The one-time build depends mostly on three things. First, your range: setting up ten products is not the same as a thousand with variants and stock rules. Second, the custom work: a standard Shopify theme in your brand style is the sweet spot for most shops, while unique features (a configurator, a connection to your accounting or inventory system) cost build hours. Third, the content: product copy and photography are rarely part of the build price, and they are exactly what decides whether a visitor buys.
The hidden costs after launch
A webshop is not a product but an ongoing operation. After handover come transaction fees per sale, any paid apps from the Shopify app store, and the cost of ongoing improvement: where do visitors drop off, which checkout step leaks. A shop nobody maintains slowly fades. So do not budget with a one-time figure, but with what it costs to keep the shop running and selling for a few years.
The math that actually matters
For a webshop, the relevant question is not what the build costs, but what an extra sale is worth. A shop with an average order value of $80 and a few extra sales a day earns back the build in months. A cheap shop that does not sell is more expensive than a good shop that does. How you build a webshop that actually sells is on our Shopify store development page.
Shopify or WordPress?
Still unsure whether Shopify is the right platform, or whether WordPress (with WooCommerce) fits better? That depends on what you sell and how. We explain the difference in Shopify vs WordPress: which should you choose?.
Cost as part of a system
At ForthScaling we do not build a webshop as a standalone thing, but as part of a system that brings in inquiries and sales: site, follow-up, and measurement working together, starting at $200 per month with no setup fees. What is included is on the pricing page. Want to know what a Shopify store costs in your situation? Schedule a free demo and we'll work it out.
